Judy Kensley McKie's Monkey Chair & Settee
Designed by Judy Kensley McKie
Monkey Chair
Cast Bronze & Walnut, 1994
36" x 25" x 25"
Sold at Christies' New York for $134,500 on 11/5/08.
Herrick & White produced a limited run of 16 chairs and 3 settees.
A daughter of artists, a painter with a fine understanding of organic form, especially of the connecting parts, McKie as furniture maker is self-taught. No one daunted her with the hierarchy of rare woods, nor a litany of joinery, nor the rituals of hand tools properly pointed. If her images are often as knowingly naif as those of Rousseau, or hauntingly stirring as Gaugin’s Noa Noa woodblocks, the results flow from common well-springs and run as purely to feed our thirst for untainted source water.

H&W craftsman Dan Latondress had taken a few pics of his work in progress in the shop. Nice!
